Under the Fair Work Act 2009 employees can be required by their employer to provide certificates for absence from work to verify absences from work due to illness or injury (personal leave), or absences due to the illness or injury to a member of the employee's immediate family or household (carer's leave).

It is deemed within a registered pharmacist's scope of practice to issue a Certificate for Absence from Work, provided they are acting within their scope of practice.

Our pharmacists limit the provision of certificates for absence from work to:

  • their area of practice and expertise, which is primarily - the supply, compounding or dispensing of medicines; the providiong of professional pharmacy services, including advice on minor conditions and the effective and safe use of medicines; and
  • circumstances where they can reasonably form a view as to an employee's fitness for work, or as to the illness or injury of the member of the household or immediate family.

To discuss the need for a medical certificate please call or visit Warnbro Pharmacy today.

It is the responsibility of the person requesting the certificate to:

  • Participate in a consultation with the pharmacist;
  • Provide the pharmacist with a truthful, complete and accurate description of the reason for requesting a certificate (which should be documented by the pharmacist);
  • Provide the pharmacist with any documentation relating to their request for a certificate - this may include, but is not limited to, prescriptions and previous certificates; and
  • Present the reason for requesting a certificate in a way that enables the pharmacist to make an accurate assessment of their eligibility for a certificate within the pharmacist's scope of practice.

*  Note - medical certificates can only be issued for the day of your consultation.

Blood glucose monitoring is a way of testing the concentration of glucose in the blood. This is done by pricking the skin to draw blood, then applying the blood onto a testing strip that is placed in a blood glucose meter. This device measures the glucose levels in your blood and gives you a reading.

An aim of diabetes management is to keep blood glucose levels (BGLs) within a specified target range. You need to balance your food with your physical activity, lifestyle and diabetes medication. Blood glucose monitoring can help you understand the link between blood glucose, food, exercise and insulin.

Warnbro Pharmacy provides blood glucose level tests for $2.

Regular checks can help prevent serious diabetes-related complications like problems with your feet, eyes, heart and kidneys. Individual members of your health care team will let you know how often you need checks, so you can schedule them into your calendar.

At Home Testing

People who take insulin need to self-monitor their blood glucose levels. Blood glucose meters are usually sold as kits giving you all the equipment that you need to start. There are many types, offering different features and at different prices to meet individual needs. Most of these are available from Warnbro Pharmacy.

To check blood glucose levels, you need:

  • A blood glucose meter
  • A lancet device with lancets
  • Blood glucose strips

Blood glucose meters are usually sold as kits giving you all the equipment you need to start. Our trained pharmacists can show you how to use your meter to get accurate results.

Warnbro Pharmacy is a register provider under the NDSS (National Diabetes Service Scheme). NDSS subsidised products are available through your NDSS Access Point – Warnbro Pharmacy

  • blood glucose testing strips (restrictions apply to people with type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin)
  • urine testing strips
  • insulin syringes and pen needles (if you need insulin or approved non-insulin injectable medications)
